We offer training for the following truck types

Light Rigid

  • Has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) more than 4.5 tonnes but not more than 8 tonnes
  • Seats more than 12 adults (including the driver) and has a GVM not more than 8 tonnes
  • To apply for this category you must have held an Australian car driver licence for at least 12 months.

Heavy Rigid

  • a motor vehicle that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) more than 8 tonnes and has 3 or more axles (whether or not the wheels on those axles are on the road)
  • a bus consisting of more than one rigid section which are connected to one another so as to allow rotary movement and passenger access between the sections
  • To apply for this category you must have held an Australian car driver licence for at least 24 months.

Heavy Combination

  • a prime mover to which is attached a single semi-trailer that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) more than 9 tonnes plus any unladen converter dolly, or
  • a rigid motor vehicle to which is attached a trailer that has a GVM more than 9 tonnes plus any unladen converter dolly.
  • To apply for this category you must have held an Australian car driver licence for at least 24 months, and an Australian driver licence to drive a Medium Rigid or Heavy Rigid licence for at least 12 months.

Multi-Combination

  • a prime mover to which is attached a single semi-trailer that has a gross vehicle mass (GVM) more than 9 tonnes plus any unladen converter dolly, or
  • a rigid motor vehicle to which is attached a trailer that has a GVM more than 9 tonnes plus any unladen converter dolly.

Gear Boxes

For Heavy Rigid and Heavy Combination licences we offer training courses for different types of gear boxes found on heavy rigid  and heavy combination trucks:

  • Auto – For trucks with an automatic gear box
  • Synchro – For trucks with a synchromesh gear box
  • Non-Synchro – For trucks with Constant mesh, Road-Ranger, Unrestricted and Crash Box Gearboxes.

The qualification you get is the same regarless of what type of gearbox you train on.

Australian Heavy Vehicle Driver Training Centre is accredited by VicRoads, we’re qualified to meet all the requirements for both safety and state regulatory requirements. We deliver heavy vehicle training in our light, medium, heavy rigid and heavy combination trucks at our approved driving ranges. Upon successful completion of the courses, AHVDTC will provide you with nationally recognised statements of attainment to go with your heavy vehicle licence.
